Transcontinental race N°4

Is it necessary to introduce the Transcontinental Race today ? By seeing the "reporter" from the GCN youtube channel, I think yes ! The first edition happened in 2013 and gets bigger every year in the world of ultra cycling, so let's start from the very begining. Ultra cycling is a type of endurance race that is out of the conventionnal distance scale. But I prefer to define it as a race that push everyone to perform an effort for at least a day, I mean, grandad Pierre will not do the same distance as his grandson Leo wich is on top physically. Even if grandad Pierre do a third of his grandson, he would still have done a huge effort during a long time. The most famous ultra cycling race today is the Paris Brest Paris wich happen every 4 years (the goal is to do 1200+km in less than 90h). Some others races grow up for 10 years now everywhere around the world, like the Race Across America (RAAM), the Tour Divide or the one I'm going to talk, The Transcontinantal Race.

Every year the formula is the same, we cross Europe without assistance and the clock don't stop. The route is not mandatory, only 4 checkpoint must be done. Starting from Le Mur de Grammont, going South through the windy and boring France (Yes, my opinion) to le Puy de Dôme, then Est for climbing some col in the Swiss (Furkapass) and Italian (Passau de Giau) wonderful Alps. After the Alps we aim for the South Est and (crossing Bosnia wich left me a mental scar last year I must admit) joining the National park of Durmitor in Montenegro, and the Grand Finish, dive in the Dardennes and the city of Canakkale.
A race which must be done without support. Every help who is not able for others riders is considered as private, and so is forbidden.
It's an adventure but it's a race before, but let's be realistic 30 secondes, finishing is already something huge. The main objectif for people is to be on time for the finisher party the 13 august. Beers and petits fours for free after 3800km, you can't decline.

For the second time, I will be at the depart of this race

Valleycat

Hey People, ! Last week end was the ValleyCat !

Valleycat 1st Edition
The very first edition of the valleycat ! Valleywhat ? Valleycat ! Valley + alleycat = Valleycat ! Ok i explain for those who don't know what's an Alleycat ! It's the usual race where bikes messengers race them self in the city ! The rules are simple, most of time, a manifest is distributed at the start with some checkpoint to validate. The faster who validate all the checkpoint and get to the finish line win. Today Mike Hall give us the opportunity to reunite 2 months after the Transcontinental for an alleycat in the Wales' valley. For me it was also a good opportunity to test my latest bike the Specialized Diverge lend by the Team Franscoop.

We are looking for these clock through the valley

Well for me everything started very badly, the  race  ride was the 24 october, I took my ticket for the
25 ... Yeah I was 1 day late. Well, changed at the last minutes my bus ticket for a train, and could be at the start with ... 3 hours late.

The others guys started at 7am, My time started at 10.15 when Mike activated my GPS tracker, but he offered me a Border's Beer, I hop on my bike not before 10.30.

Last check of the map before take off

I wanted so much to catch the other that I forgot everything in my bag. No helmet, no light, just my tool bag. I started at a steady speed, more than 30km/h average speed.

Even if the morning was rainy, afternoon was sunny.

I had the opportunity to test the Specialized Diverge lend by Franscoop (www.franscoop.com) on some gravel road. It was a really nice shortcut, Mike told me at the beginning to don't miss a turn, if I do, I would finish on a road as bad as the Strada del Assietta

Guess where I ended up, well the Diverge show me part of his potential, incredible how the bike stick to the gravel even with slick tires. I could climb some mountain bike track easily.

The night approched faster than I expected, I speeded up into the aero position and catch up with Martin (http://themartincox.co.uk/) and another rider, with no light I didn't wanted to take any special risk, I finished safely with Martin's light.

People and TCR veteran were there, I'm glad to see my friend Gareth one more time. Beer and charity lottery, I won a cute cap

Wales was awesome, can't wait for the next one !
